The best time to visit Nam Nao’s Waterfall is in Winter and Rainny Season

Travelling Haew Sai Waterfall is about 500 meters for from each other,At the Km 67 marked on the route no.1 ( Lomsak-Chumphae). Get the car parks. Haew Sai Waterfall is about 1 km. The water, of the beautiful Sham Sai Creek. Fall down almost 20 meters over a larch rock formation where man can stand underneath . The Saithong Waterfall is 30 meter wide and 4 meter high and wonderfull.

Taad Phranba Waterfall is reach by the route no.2216 ( Baan Huay Sanamsal-Lomkao) at km 20 . It is 30 meters high. The water falls 2 sters from Choen River.

Phu Ruea National Park

This National Park with an area of 75,525 square kilometers has a vast pine-covered plain 1,365 meters above sea level at its summit. Due to its high elevation and cool climate visitors are drawn to the Park all year round. However, during the cool season, visitors flock to the Park to experience wintry weather. Attractions in the Park include observation points, waterfalls, rock gardens, and caves. In particular there are Pha Lon Noi, which offers a spectacular sunrise and beautiful scenery, Pha Sub Thong, a very steep cliff, Namtok Huai Phai, a 30 meter-high waterfall, and Phu Ruea Summit, which provides a fine view of Huang and Khong Rivers. In addition, there are several resorts on the slopes of Phu Ruea, as well as Chateau de Loei Winery, a huge vineyard with modern wine-making facilities. The Park is located 60 kilometers west of Amphoe Muang on Highway No. 203.

How to get there

While Loei is easily accessible by road, one needs to use Udon Thani or Khon Kaen railway stations to reach Loei by train. A commercial airport is situated 6 kilometers from the town center.

As for river transportation, local residents use the Khong River to connect to Laos.

By Car

Route 1: From Bangkok, take Highway No. 1 to Saraburi and Highway No. 21 via Phetchabun and continue the trip along Highway No. 203 via Lom Sak, Dan Sai and Phu Ruea to Loei. Total distance is 520 kilometers.

Route 2: From Bangkok, take Highway No. 1 to Saraburi and Highway No. 2 via Nakhon Ratchasima to Khon Kaen, then continue driving along Highway No. 12 via Chum Phae before turning left into Highway No. 201 and proceed to Loei via Wang Saphung. Total distance is approximately 540 kilometres.

By Bus

Buses depart from Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) to Loei every day. There are VIP (24-seat) buses departing at 8.30 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. while air-conditioned and regular buses depart on a daily basis. Daily buses are also operated on the Bangkok-Dan Sai-Phu Ruea route. For more information call 0 2936 2852-66

By Train

Regular trains depart from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Railway Station (Tel. 1690, 02 223 7010-20) to Railway Station located in Udon Thani province. By Air

Visitors can fly from Bangkok to Phetchabun, Udon Thani or Khon Kaen and continue the trip to Loei by bus. Getting around the city

Tuk-tuk, which can be found at the bus station, can take you to any place in town for 5-10 bahts/person. Alternatively, a chartered tuk-tuk will cost approximately 40-50 baht/trip into town.

Getting to other provinces/Loei’s districts

Numerous air-conditioned and regular buses provide services from Loei to its neighboring provinces namely Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok and Nakhon Ratchasima Provinces. In addition, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Provinces can also be traveled to from Loei. Other than these provinces, Pak Chom, Chiang Khan, Na Duang, Wang Saphung and Tha Li Districts can also be reached from Loei.

The Nam Nao National Park is an immense tract of forest still in perfect condition. With pineries, grasslands and virgin jungles, it is habitat to large number of animals and more than 100 species of birds. During December-January, the mercury could drop to as low as 2-5 degrees Celsius. The park headquarters is about 50 kilometres to the west of Lom Sak district on Highway No. 12. Points of interest are spread out. Attractions reached by taking Highway No. 12 (Lom Sak-Chum Phae) include:-

Nam Nao National Park is very attractive place for sightseeing having beautiful mountains which are the sources of many important rivers such as Pa-Sak,Nam Phong and Loei rivers. The Department of Forestry announced this park to be the National Reservation Forest Area in B.E. 2507(1954) and later to be the National Park on May 4, B.E. 2515(1972) The area has cold weather and there are many wild animals such as bison, elephant, deer, wild dong, tiger, rabbit, jungle fowl, phesant and many pretty birds. The route in brief: Treking through a thick forest , up and down the hill and cross water ways.

Highlight : Being on the first trail but turn to the sceneric viepoint, find the sign of Lan Hin Tak, then Huay Namchoen . The trail is not hard. There are stange plants and plenty of low-leveled plants.
Out of the thick forest is bamboo forest where is elephants’habitat .At the sceneric viewpoint there is a big Sai which its fruit is a birds’ favorite.

Route 3
Hua Ya Khroe
Distance: 1.1 kmHighlight : Start from the rear of the tourist center, then get over the bridge to the thick forest which is fulled of (เถาวัลย์) There is a ค่างแว่น . watch point.Normally ค่างแว่น come out to the sun in the morning.
Then, continue to forest and bamboo forest. Hereby, there is an interesting big Prong.

Route 4

Distance : 2.7 km
The trail in brief : Thich forest , not high slope.
Highlight : From the tourist center to Huay Ya Khroe, the leads hikers th Wild fowl habitat, big Sai of hundreds years of age, elephants’ route , the sence f difference between Thick forest and Dry dipterocarp forest
Finally , hiking up for some 600 meters to the Sunrise viewpoint.
Tip : Do backward trip by dribing up to view the sunrise , the walk down back to the center for breakfast.

How to go?

By Car

To get to Nam Nao from Khon Kaen follow highway 12 for 145 km. to the km. 50 point and then turn right and follow the road for 2km. to the Park entrance. From Lom Sak follow Highway 12 for 55 km. to km. 50 point and then turn left and follow the road for a further 2km. to the park.

Phu Wiang National Park ( Khon Kaen )

Phu Wiang National Park
This national park always reminds tourists about dinosaurs. Indeed, nobody had formerly ever though the Isan plateau was once home of dinosaurs. Until 1976 when a uranium survey team discovered a piece of fossil, which was examined by French specialists and declared that it was a left knee bone of a dinosaur. After that, serious execration has never ended until now.

On the hill Pratu Ti Ma, which was the first site, geologists have found fossils of a dinosaur, 15 metres high with a long neck and tail. This is a kind of plant-eating dinosaur never found else where before, so it was named Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae to honour H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. In this site, over ten teeth of a meat-eating dinosaur have also been found. So geologists and scientists presumed that the long-necked dinosaur was prey for these teeths owner. Among these teeths, one is different. After a study, scientist found that it belonged to a new species of dinosaur never found before. So it was named Siamosaurus Suteethorni after the discoverer, Mr. Warawuth Suteethorn.

All the three sites are not far from the headquarters, and tourists can also visit the second and third sites nearby.

Fossils of Siamotyrannus Isanensis found here are the oldest ones, dating back 120-130 million years. This indicates that tyrannosaurus originated in Asia. These fossils are now displayed in the museum of the Department of Mineral Resources.

At the 8th site, there are 68 footprints of dinosaurs, dating back 140 million years ago. Most of them belong to the world's smallest species of meat-eating dinosaur, which walked on two legs. Among such footprints, there is one bigger footprint, assumed to belong to Carnosaurus.

These sites are 19 kilometres from the headquarters. It takes an hour to get there by car and four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. In many sites, geologists found fossils of dinosaur babies, small crocodiles and mussels dating back to 150 million years ago. Besides fossils of dinosaurs, there are also traces of ancient civilizations in this area including a high relief of the reclining Buddha on the cliff, at the crest of Phu Wiang Mountain. The Buddha image was carved in the 9th century, mirroring an influence from Indian art. Nearby is Tham Famue Daeng, Dang, or Red Palm Cave, at Ban Hin Rong. The cave wall houses prehistoric paintings of cavemen's hands from sprays of red ochre. Natural attractions in the park include waterfalls and field of wild flowers. Namtok Thap phaya Suea is a small waterfall near to Tham Famue Daeang. Namtok Tat Fa is a 15-metre high waterfall that can be accessed by car. The waterfall is 18 kilometres from Amphoe Phu Wiang. Some 5 kilometres from Namtok Tat Fa is Namtok Tat Klang which is a 8-metre high waterfall. Savanna and rock plateaus are always blanketed with wild flowers in full bloom by the end of the rainy season.

Phu Wiang National Park acquires a total area of 380 square kilometres in Amphoe Si Chomphu and Amphoe Chum Phae.

How to get there: from downtown Khon Kaen, visitors can get there via Highway 12 and connect to Highway 2038, bound for Amphoe Phu Wiang. From Amphoe Phu Wiang, talk the Phu Wiang-Ban Muaeng Mai Road, passing the national park unit, Pak Chong Phu Wiang at kilometre 23. Turn left at kilometre 30 at Ban Pho Reservoir and the national parks headquarters is 8 kilometres away. The headquarters features an exhibition about the dinosaurs and fossils found in the area. Phu Kradueng National Park ( Loei )

Phu Kradueng National Park

This is the ultimate destination for many Thai trekkers. The goal is to hike up to the summit and conquer the distance of 1,325 meters above sea level. At the top of Phu Kradueng is a wide plain of about 60 square kilometers. There is a cold-climate pine forest and a grass field full of wild flowers and orchids that bloom in different seasons. In addition, there are several lovely waterfalls and an observation point that is provides spectacular views during sunrise and sunset.

To get there,

take Bangkok-Loei bus and get off at Pha Nok Khao, the boundary between Khon Kaen and Loei. From there, take a mini-bus to the park office at the foot of the mountain and walk up Phu Kradueng for 6 kilometers. The park is open during October to May and closed during the rainy season to rejuvenate the flora and fauna. Park attractions include: Pha Nok Aen, the cliff that offers a breathtaking view of the crimson sunrise, Pha Lom Sak, a sandstone ledge jutting into space providing a fine view of the hills and valleys and Pha Yiap Mek, where cottony clouds suggest a misty world of shadow figures.
The park is open to visitors from 7.00 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. daily and is closed for forest regeneration during 1 June – 30 September every year.

To get there from the city, take Highway No, 203 passing Amphoe Dan Sai, turn right onto Highway No. 2113 at kilometer 82 marker and proceed for another 50 kilometers to the park’s office.

General Information

The park possesses the most pristine forest cover in Loei Province. A number river of catchment area important in this dry corner of Northeast Thailand, start here. It is also enriched by several local cultures of the people who live adjacent to the park boundary. The park was established on 2 April 1991 to honour the anniversary of the 36th burthday of Her Royal Highness Pricess Sirindhorn. The park's other attractive points are Tard Huong Fall, Phu Teen Suei Sai scenic spot, Rocky Entrance at Phu Teen Suei Sai spot, and Nam Pah Fall.

Topography

It is a highland mountain, and very steep between 2%-50%. On the west is a very big forest as well as very steep also, however it is not on the east. It is 600-1,408 meters high above the sea level.

Climate

It is cool a whole year because the forest is very well reserved. Besides, it is much cold in the winter.

Flora and Fauna

There are many plants and wild lives such as antelopes, deer, palm civet, boar, bear, tiger, hyenas, bison, flying squirrel, squirrel, as well as porcupines which villagers call it “Dtoa-Horn”. They are living in the hole but they don’t dig it by themselves as normal porcupines. There are also many kinds of birds such as hawk, warblers, barbet, black bird, wild fowl, magpie, and there is “Nok Kong Kod” which there are more than one spur and looks like peacock. There also are reptiles such as turtle, chameleon, ground lizards, skinks, monitors, snakes, daces, serpent-head fish, carps, eel, and scorpion fish.

Phra That Si Song Rak ( Loei )

Phra That Si Song Rak
Located on the bank of the Man River, 83 kilometers from Amphoe Mueang, this large Lao-style pagoda similar to that of Phra That Phanom houses relics of the Lord Buddha. Phra That Si Song Rak is a plaster-covered brick pagoda with a square base of 11 meters on each side. The pagoda itself is 32 meters high. Built in the Ayutthaya period in 1560 as a symbol of camaraderie between Ayutthaya and Si Sattana Khanahut (Vientiane), the place it is worth a visit, especially during the Phi Ta Khon celebration held there every May or June.
Tips for visitors: As the pagoda is built for friendship and peace, red attire and red flowers are prohibited as the color denotes violence.
To get there, take Highway No. 203, turn right at the kilometer 66 marker on to Highway No. 2013 and proceed for another 17 kilometers

Khao Kor Palace is located at Khao Ya, Tambol Thung Samor. Lt. Gen. Pichit Kullawanichaya, commanding General 1 st, and Mr.Jamnien Pativethwanakij, Governor of Phetchabun in the past, cooperated to construct Khao Kor Palace for the purpose of presentation to His Majesty the King who will reside here while observation His Majesty the King's project and visiting population in Phetchabun and nearby provinces. Khao Kor Palace is one floor building, it was built in semicircle shape and in touch. Only the King's bedchamber side was built 2 floors

Rather, the name "Khao Kor" is long-time known of Switzerland liked atmosphere, no matter its fresh and cool weather and the pristine scenery whenever visitting.

One of the reason to popularity of Khao Kor is its well arrangement of the accommodation , either natural style or Thai classical style, the delicious and the reputed passion juice.

Khao Kho is made up of mountain ranges to northwest of town about 1,174 metres above mean sea level covered in the main by deciduous plants. Very cold during November-February, it once was the base room which communist insurgents conducted their struggles against the authorities during 1968-1982. Today it is accessible via two routes; off Highway No. 12 (Phitsanulok - Lom Sak) at Ban Camp Son with a further distance of 30 kilometres of off highway No. 21 at Ban Na Ngua, about 13 kilometres from town with a further distance of 30 kilometres. Both routes wind through considerably steep terrain. Interesting places include various viewing points, remains of communist bases and buildings, war memorial, arms museum, a Chedi containing Holy Relic and the Si Dit waterfall.

A large waterfall on Khao Kor where the water flows from those complex mountain, to Thung Salaengluang National Palk, Kaeng Sopha Waterfall etc

At Sridit Waterfall there is an old water mill built by the communist rebels to mill rice. They used the noise of the waterfall to mask the thudding sounds of the milling process.

This beautiful waterfall is available for tourism all year long. There is a pond at its base that swimming is available in Winter and Summer, but too danger, whilst beautiful,in Rainny Season.
Its water flows from Salieng Haeng canel on Khao Kor , passing over this wide curtain-liked cliff then flow in parallet with Phitsanulok-Lomsuk road.

Not far from the fall there is Water Whell and rice miller remains of the previous communist existing.

This wildlife reserve is on the same way as Chulabhorn Dam between Km. 24-25. It has an area of 1,560 square kilometres. The geography consists of a sandstone mountain range with high cliffs. The verdant jungle is the watershed of an important river of the Northeast called the Chi and is home to an abundance of wild animals, as well as over 350 bird species. The reserve is ideal for studying flora and fauna. The most interesting spot is Thung Kamang, a grass field that is the grazing ground for many animals. The reserve is open only to persons wishing to study nature. Permission must be obtained from the reserve chief by writing to P.O. Box 3, Chum Phae Post Office, Khon Kaen or contact the Wildlife Reserve Section, Royal Forestry Department, Bang Khen, Bangkok.

Chulabhorn Dam
Located in Tambol Thung Lui Lai, Amphur Kon San, about 120 kms. From town center, is popular with both one-day and wvernight tourists. Lts lake-like reservoir provides beautiful scenery and surrounding. Chulabhorn Dam is at Tambon Thung Phra and dams the Phrom River. It is a rock-filled dam with an earth core. The dam is 700 metres long and 70 metres high. It is used to generate electricity and irrigation. Boat rentals are available to view the sights of the reservoir. To get to the dam, take the Chaiyaphum-Chum Phae road (Highway No. 201) to Nong Song Hong junction, then turn left onto Highway No. 2055, a total distance of 120 kilometres from Chaiyaphum

Phrathat Kham Kaen ( Khon Kaen )

Located in Wat Chetiyaphum, the Phrathat is believed to be the origin of Khon Kaen city since ancient times. Phrathat Kham Kaen can be date the 20th century A.D. According to the legend, a back to king who ruled Mori town in the Khmer kingdom assigned 9 senior monks to bring relics of the Lord Buddha to be placed in Phrathat Phanom. On the way, the caravan spent a night here, setting a camp by the heartwood of a dead tamarind tree. The caravan reached Nakhon Phanom on the next day just to learn that Phrathat Phanom had already been completed, so they returned on the same route with a wish to place the relics at their hometown instead. On the way back, they were surprised to find the dead tamarind tree buddingly lush. Therefore, they decided to build a Phrathat here and placed the relics and Buddha images inside, naming Phrathat Kham Kaen which means the stupa of tamarind heartwood.

The Phrathat is now well renovated and landscaped. A celebration is held annually on the full moon day of the 6th lunar month. Phrathat Kham Kaen is 12 kilometres from downtown Khon Kaen. Visitors can get there via Highway 209 (Khon Kaen-Kalasin route). After crossing the Nam Phong River, turn left and keep going for another 14 kilometres.
